Wandering Hobo
So, today's one of those days when you come to bear on who you are, where you've come from, and where you're going. -In short, I don't have any work to DISTRACT me from these questions. Susan's getting married today. I feel SOMETHING about that, but mostly its self pity and not worth entertaining. That won't get me anywhere. My mum said something interesting about marriage before, and that was this- 'Weddings are just a day, the real challenge is how you continue after 'the big day'' Rob's getting married too, and all this talk of weddings has rekindled the hopeless romantic in me. I want a big wedding. Every last cheesy cliche. Big reception, the works. At this stage I know its something I'll probably never have, and thats fine (well, not really, but whatever). I seem to live my life between overly high expctactions and very little results. In the gutter, looking up, one might say. That sounds dangerously close to calling myself a loser, but I don't think so. I become obsessed with things, be it animation, comic books, background design, concept art, music, and pursue them vigourously, in short bursts.Them being new areas, I have to start at the bottom rung, and I've been cool with that. Comics is the newest one, after Comic Con I was in full Comics mode. I did feel like a pretender to the throne though, not having sufficient background knowledge. I've been catching up on my reading, and thoroughly loving it. Already though, I'm feeling the tug of other work options, because, lets face it, there isn't much money in comics vs hours contributed. I would quite happily colour comic books all day if there was a steady stream of work- VERY happily. But half my time is spent LOOKING for work. While concept art won't solve this, the games industry won't die during this recession. Comics are turbulent waters right now, what with the Diamond price hike. Webcomics are the way to go, but I....don't have the solution to making a living from them. Webcomics tend to be like the funnies, excluding Zuda, and my comics have more drama than an angsty room full of Grey's Anatomy writers. Which is odd, because I HATE watching dramas. Haha, in short, the whole thing can be summed up in this - I need a direction. Someone point me, and make me walk. | | Wednesday, December 3rd, 2008 | | 2:47 pm |
Way to suck balls, LJ
I can't skip back more than 50 entries on my friends page. What the hell, LJ? Seriously...thats like the best thing about the site...and its gone. : / Yeah, to those who aren't over on dA, here's a life update. Still living with my parents, yarp. Now a full on comic geek, working for IDW on an upcoming Angel release. Which according to THE CHART puts me in the highest echelon of geekdom. ehhhhhhh.......working in an internet cafe also. Tis easy, and tis money. Still very single, but hopefully that will be addressed shortly. Working eternally on a story called the Darklight Crisis, and by my estimation should be finished in about 15 years. Thats about it really. | | Monday, September 15th, 2008 | | 2:54 pm |
Yeah, its been a while.
Don't really know where else to go to write this. I could start a new blog, but what'd be the point? I'm scared. Of everything. Well, of FEELING things. I'm scared of letting people in, for fear that they'll reject me. By that same token, I stop caring about other people, so that I won't get hurt. No, thats not the same thing. I thought it was, and just figured this out over the past couple of days. So I'm trying. Trying to open myself to other people, both in terms of who I care about, but who I let care about me. Which I can't control, but denying them is having a negative effect. The result- possibly the most emotional couple of days. The largest barrier to everything I have is not letting things get serious. I really do use humour to avoid actually facing issues. And to try and drop that charade- which is just what it is, is painful. I only now realise how much I've hurt some of the people I really care about, and I don't know if I'll be able to make it up. I made a resolution last year, not to apologise, and not to regret. Such bullshit. It works in theory, but I'm not steeled enough to live like that. We all need people, and basically I've let everyone down. I don't want to open old wounds, but I need to apologise for a lot. The people involved deserve it. One person in particular. I spent an hour last night building up the courage to apologise. But I choked. I would normally try and hide behind a letter/text/email/song/something, but thats just pure cowardice. And I don't want to be a coward anymore. So it might take me a try or two, but I want to do this in person. To other people, who I can't see face to face, and who might actually end up reading this- I'm truly sorry. There's no excuse for my behaviour. Running away like a spoilt little child doesn't count as a valid reason. | | Saturday, December 15th, 2007 | | 2:52 pm |
Got self loathing?
Yeah, you know it sucks when your own dreams think you're crap. Had a dream I got fired : / True it was from NCIS, but thats what you get for watching hours and hours of that show. But oh well. Which brings me to talk of heroes, and sources of inspiration. Who are your heroes? Real people or fictional characters? MY personal heroes are as follows- Iroh (from avatar) All around wisdom, chooses his fights, appreciates a good cup o tea Glen Keane- insanely good animation skills LJ Gibbs-For pure kickassery UNFORTUNATELY, Iroh and Gibbs are mutually exclusive. YAY. : / | | Wednesday, December 12th, 2007 | | 11:24 pm |
Anyone seen my blue fleece?
If I like a piece of clothing, I tend to hold onto it for years. For example, my green fleece, as sported by my avatar. I've had that about 15 years now, and still wear it around the house. My blue fleece was quickly becoming a member of the same club, with about 8 years under its belt. Had a lot of good memories whilst wearing that fleece, and it meant a lot to me. And now its gone missing, probably thrown out. Stop whining Ciaran. BUT, it had my keys ,wallet, MONEY, bankcards passport AND driving license in it. So well fuck damn shit. I was in Dublin the last time I had it. AFTER STAYING IN ALS I THINK. WAITAMINIT... There could be hope. ........signs into MSN. MORE ON THIS LATER. | | Friday, December 7th, 2007 | | 3:09 pm |
HEY KIDS! WANT A JOB?
CAUSE I DO! I'm out of work again, out of the best interests of all concerned. Anyone looking to EMPLOY would be appreciated TOODLES. | | Friday, November 9th, 2007 | | 5:02 pm |
Sorry is the fool who trades his soul for a corvette Thinks he'll get the girl he'll only get the mechanic, What's missing? He's living a day he'll soon forget. That's one more time around, and there is not a sound He's standing there just pretending that there's someone around He's missing, not living a day he'll soon regret. Sorry is the fool who turns his hopes into regret. Thinks he knows it all instead he chooses to forget He's wishing, we're all missing a day we won't forget Waking up because its morning. Somewhere people keep on calling Locked in a giant house that alarming The days just seem to pass Sorry is the fool who trades his love for high rise rent It seems the more you make equals the loneliness you get He's stiffening, we're all whistling, a man we'll soon forget. | | Sunday, October 28th, 2007 | | 3:04 pm |
Well fuck and damn
I should be in France. ....I didn't go because I had prior commitments. Now ALL of them have fallen through. I am more than a little pissed off. The end. | | Monday, October 22nd, 2007 | | 5:42 pm |
Life's too short- some avatar spoilers
I was going to write something horribly emo, but I someone else's moanings and decided life was too short. Sure things are pretty damn fucked up, but it could always be worse. Correction, horribly SHINJI. So yeah. I'm going to go hop in a giant robot and dance around Tokyo a Tri. In short, I need a girlfriend, a job, a sense of direction, my own place, and to make it ON MY OWN. Hah, Zuko makes me laugh, and gives me perspective. Iroh is a fantastic role model. Up there with Rock Lee. He is wise, well traveled and appreciates a good cup of tea. : D WHY ARE ALL MY HEROES FICTIONAL? Which reminds me of one of my most embarrassing situations. When I was in first class (thats what, 3rd grade) we were asked who our hero was, and while everyone listed off footballers, I was confused. 'What's a hero?' I was told its someone you looked up to and respected, someone you'd like to be. I said, truthfully 'Bugsy' ... ...as in Bugsy fromT-REX. if anybody remembers those jazz club singing tyrannosaur brother superheroes? I was laughed at by the whole class. But fuck em. I am actually closer to being a cartoon character than they are being footballers. So yeah, in the moment between moments at the moment (moment). I just need to pick myself up and get back on the wagon. | | Wednesday, September 19th, 2007 | | 9:17 pm |
OK this is getting freaky
My house makes noises, same as any house. When you're on your own, you become more aware of these. I have learned to adjust. What I HAVEN'T adjusted to is lighs turning themselves on and off, mystery key-in-the-door noises, and shapes moving in the corner of my eye. If anyone would like to come and rescue me, possibly even have a few beers, it'd be more than welcome. : / | | Thursday, August 30th, 2007 | | 7:49 pm |
Emo for a bit, bare with me
I'm in one of those horrible ruts. My work is shit, and is largely ignored. I'm trying my hardest and getting less feedback. Not from my bosses, they're being great. Just me, and everyone else. I'm in a right state. I think I'm addicted to this whole internet shizzle. I ALSO think I'm sick of this band shite. Now that Niall's back, I'm playing guitar, which to be quite frank, I suck at. PROPER suck, But its my only income for now, and I'm still running at a loss from buying my gear. My love life is flatlining, even there's someone I like. Who is single. Except I'm seriously lacking balls, and they're a good friend who I dont ant to screw up things with. MRARGH. So what am I? A guy who spends his entire day and night drawing children 0.0, occasionally stopping to play music he doesnt like. WHAT THE FUCK. CHARACTER ANIMATOR, say it with me, CHARACTER ANIMATOR. Fuck this shit. The cooker is on fire | | Tuesday, August 21st, 2007 | | 4:19 pm |

Busy
Today has been a very busy day. Bought one of those air hostess type bags, so I KNOW I can travel safely with it. Bought a rail card, my train tickets for London, a white shirt helped Lisa buy a blouse and a dress, enjoyed some coffee at Starbucks and hoovered my house. Also rendered out my reel. Going to put it on DVD tonight if I have time before my family arrives. Also got my graduation garments and stuff, all ready for tomorrow. So, um yeah. LOTS OF THINGS DONE. My Adobe suite should be arrived now, so everything I'm doing is nice and legit. No job yet, but for now I dont care. I hope to make an impressionon the guys at Passion Pictures. Dont think I'm gonna take the teaching job, but money will be the deciding factor. That and council tax/rent/other commitments etc. If the money IS good, that might stop me leaving in the future. DANG. Ah well. DO YOUR BEST. Thats all we can do. | | Thursday, June 14th, 2007 | | 6:39 pm |
OH YES
Seeing as Laura got hoarded by a gang of vicious zombies today, if by hoarded I mean bit, and by gang I mean an unconfirmed number, possibly 1, I thought I would share with you my random occurences from yesterday. AS ALL OF MY STORIES START, I WAS OUT FOR A WALK. In Dundee. Now, I dont know if you've been to Dundee, but its home to the world's biggest seagulls. Wingspans of about 1.5 metres from what I've seen (correct me here, I think that's right). But there's one difference between the carrion of dublin and their dundonian counterparts; the scottish birds know no fear. . Clapping, shouting, and stamping loudly on the ground doesnt even make them flinch. They think they own the place And what I soon find out, they like their bite to match their bark. So as a point of order, I give the birds something to fear. Not out of my way, but a foot in their direction (never making contact) never goes amiss. But yesterday, I saw the biggest one ever on a phone box, and was a little put off by the scale of it. So I sneaked up and jumped up the side, giving it an unmerciful fright. I didnt think birds could make facial expressions, but its horrid beady yellow eyes actually went O.O It flew off, understandably pissed. I then shared my theory with my friends whom I was walking with about the seagul mafia with their pigeon bitches, sitting on the highest rooftop like the domineering CCTV of the nature world. All of a sudden, birds started swooping at me. There were roughly six or seven of them coming around again and again. I was ready, I had a bag with a book in it. One or two pigeons joined the fray before I got into Tesco. My mates saw this happening, and were a little gobsmacked. So yeah, the gulls have been at me for a while (because I threw my phone at a fairly big one for picking on a group of pigeons for no reason), but this pushed them over the edge. Which leads me to this question, how good is a bird's sense of smell? Or do they base their recognition on colour? I doubt hey recognise faces over the obvious, and somehow I dont think my massive eyebrows stand out too much here... hmmm. There were three seagulls standing in my parking lot today when I left the house, and more onthe rooftop of every building I passed. There weren't this many in dublin by any means, and they sure as hell didnt have this mean streak. DUNDEE IS A QUEER PLACE. | | 6:23 pm |
Update
As it turns out, I've nothing to really update on. Little jobs keeping me busy, but apart from that I'm starting to get a bit of cabin fever here. I want to go home, not in a mad homesick way, but more in a my-time-is-up-here kind of way. I've been animating in Flash. Its not as demon awful as I thought. Its not as intuitive or clean as 3d or classical 2d, but it gets the job done quickly. I've been working straight in flash so far. I'd like to do a cross-match with Illustrator, pull out something NICE. But yeah, roaring lions and all are looking OK. Drew Mungo a bit the other day and he turned out alright. Its the symbol stuff that doesnt appeal to me. Rough animation all the way. Workwurkvurk | | Wednesday, June 13th, 2007 | | 3:27 pm |
Adooooooooooobe
I just bought the C2 suite, with a complimentary upgrade to the CS3 suite at the end of June. HELLZ YEAH. Not even their horrible hold music can bring me down | | Tuesday, June 12th, 2007 | | 2:51 pm |
What to do?
Right, so I'm at this big metaphorical crossroads. If I go back to Ireland now, I'll be able to look for jobs there. But I dont have my reel pack done yet. If I stay here, I've to find somewhere new to live, PRONTO. So hanging around in Dundee til the end of the month was the plan, but then I'm left til JULY before I start looking for work in Ireland. I need to BE in Ireland because sending reels and interviews and things required my actually BEING there. I've had a guy interested in me doing character design, but I'm not sure if he wants to just rip of my chars. He said 'send me all of your original characters. not drawings of the turtles.' wtf? Trust or no? I've been offered a teaching job in Edinburgh. Kinda. They sound like they want me, and I've to go down to discuss hours with them on the 22nd. DAY AFTER GRADUATION :O I was thinking I'd take it, and balance my other work on the side. But then again I'm always balancing too much and my work ALWAYS suffers. So I think I'm not going to take the path of least resistance this time and hold out for a proper job. I'm not experienced enough to teach 3d. 2D, hells yeah. But 3d, no. Adobe are dicking me about when I try to buy legit software. So I'm waiting til they sort their shit, but I've got work pending. I've to do a small animation for the jamboree (proper animation), as well as a lot of illustration work and one or two graphic design jobs. My cursor is going mental, FYI. So my plate, while officially empty, is really quite full. I'm just working on my reel at present, doing some 3d. Maya is FARRRRRRRR better to animate with than max, and because its on my laptop, it can stream sound (unlike max on my desktop). But all the work seems to be in Max for some reason.... hmmm. That reminds me, I've to get some demo rigs for max, as I've applied for a job as a max animator and I want to have some fresh stuff to show them. The end of June thing has its fallbacks, but its definitely a plan, and a strong base to work from. I apologise for how this might read, its just something I needed to put down on paper so to speak. Hope everyone is doing well. KENT, if you're reading this, a belated happy birthday | | Friday, June 1st, 2007 | | 5:01 pm |

Soccer practice
Congrats to Pat on getting a job with Glasgow Animation. With people out of my class getting jobs left right and centre, its starting to feel like not being picked for soccer practice. Sure there's interest, so I'm keeping my hopes up, but I cant help but notice the growing tightness in my chest. AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAGH Things could work out very well, or very badly. Time just ticks by. THANK GOD FOR BACKUP PLANS :O It actually feels like that split second before you go over the edge on a rollercoaster, except very very prolonged. ALSO, new story idea, starting to look interesting. HMM, I smell Pantone markers. ODD. THE END |
